The Caribbean Premier League operates as the region’s premier professional Twenty20 franchise cricket competition. Established in 2013 by Cricket West Indies in partnership with Verus International, it replaced the Caribbean Twenty20 to become the top-tier domestic event. The structure differs significantly from traditional regional board systems, such as the West Indies T20 Cup, by utilising a commercial franchise model rather than administrative oversight. This approach allows for the recruitment of international stars alongside local talent, whereas domestic cups typically focus exclusively on West Indies players representing regional boards like Trinidad & Tobago or Jamaica.
The competition features a double round-robin group stage where each team plays ten matches, followed by a four-team playoff structure consisting of an Eliminator, Qualifier 1, Qualifier 2, and the Final. Teams hold permanent franchise rights, meaning there is no promotion or relegation within the league. Historically, the league began with five teams, expanding to six in 2024 with the addition of the Antigua & Barbuda Falcons, and further to seven in 2026 when the Jamaica Kingsmen joined.
Trinbago Knight Riders stand as the most successful team, having claimed four titles in 2017, 2018, 2020, and 2023. The St Lucia Kings are the current champions, having secured the 2024 edition. Other winners include the Guyana Amazon Warriors, Jamaica Tallawahs, St Kitts & Nevis Patriots, and Barbados Royals. The league has seen several title sponsors, including Limacol, Hero MotoCorp, and the current holder, Republic Bank. The format and ownership model distinguish it from neighbouring domestic competitions, which remain board-administered and locally focused.
