The competition served as the premier domestic Twenty20 tournament for women in England and Wales. It launched in 2021 under the name Women’s Regional T20 before receiving its current title the following year. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) organised the event until it concluded after the 2024 season. The restructure replaced the regional model with county-based sides for the successor competition.
The tournament featured eight fixed franchise teams representing broad geographical clusters rather than individual counties. Southern Vipers secured the championship in 2022 and 2023. South East Stars claimed the opening edition in 2021, while The Blaze won the final contest in 2024. No promotion or relegation existed between the participating entities.
The structure of the season changed significantly over its four-year run. The opening two campaigns divided the teams into two groups of four, with the top two sides from each group progressing to a single-day knockout finale. A single-table format returned in 2023, allowing the leader to reach the final directly and the runners-up to battle in a semi-final. The 2024 revival saw four teams qualify for the final day, requiring two semi-finals before the concluding match.
The tournament operated alongside the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy, a fifty-over competition. Both events ceased operations in 2024 as part of the ECB’s Project Darwin initiative. The new framework aims to align the women’s game more closely with the men’s professional structure.
