About

The Charlotte Edwards Cup was a professional women's domestic Twenty20 cricket competition in England and Wales, organized by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB). Founded in 2021, the tournament replaced the previous Women's Cricket Super League (WCSL) as part of the ECB's new regional elite structure. Originally launched as the "Women's Regional T20," it was renamed two days before the first match in honour of Charlotte Edwards, England's most capped player and former captain, though she was not the founder.

The competition sat at the top tier of the domestic women's T20 pyramid, running alongside the 50-over Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy and the mixed-gender competition The Hundred. It featured eight regional franchise teams: Southern Vipers, Sunrisers, The Blaze, South East Stars, Southern Vipers, Northern Diamonds, North West Thunder, and Western Storm. These teams represented multi-county regions rather than individual counties. There was no promotion or relegation; the eight franchises were fixed.

The format evolved over its four-year existence. In 2021 and 2022, teams were split into two groups, with the top teams advancing to a "Finals Day" knockout stage. In 2023, a single group format was introduced where each team played every other team once, with the top three advancing to semi-finals and the final. In 2024, the format expanded to ten matches per team, with the top four qualifying for Finals Day. Southern Vipers were the most successful team, winning the trophy twice (2022 and 2023). South East Stars won the inaugural 2021 edition, defeating Northern Diamonds in the final. The Blaze won the 2024 edition, their first title, marking the last time the competition was held.

The Charlotte Edwards Cup was discontinued after the 2024 season. In 2025, the ECB replaced it with the Women's T20 Blast, which reverted to a county-based structure, alongside the Women's One-Day Cup replacing the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy. The competition was distinct from The Hundred in that it used a standard 20-over T20 format, featured only women's teams contracted to regional hubs (unlike The Hundred's city franchises which fielded both men's and women's teams), and operated under the domestic ECB structure rather than as a separate commercial franchise league.
