The Emerald Challenge is a domestic cricket competition in Ireland, run by Cricket Ireland since its inception in 2024. It was created as an interim solution to replace the Inter-Provincial Championship, which had been suspended since 2019. The event serves primarily as a preparatory series for Ireland’s senior national team ahead of international Test matches. It fills the gap left by the absence of a regular multi-team domestic first-class structure.
The competition features two representative squads: the Raiders and the Strikers. These teams are described as “quasi-franchise” sides, composed of the top 26 players in Ireland rather than representing specific provincial unions. This approach marks a shift from the provincial representation seen in previous iterations of domestic cricket in the country.
The format of the tournament has evolved over its short history. The inaugural edition in 2024 consisted of a single four-day first-class match, which concluded in a draw. The following year, the competition switched to a white-ball List A format, a contest won by the Strikers. In 2026, the event reverted to a single four-day red-ball fixture, with the Strikers securing victory once again. As of the current season, the Strikers hold the title.
There is no promotion or relegation associated with the Emerald Challenge, as it operates as a selected squad fixture rather than a league with standings. Cricket Ireland aims to reintroduce a provincial first-class structure by 2027, but the competition remains the primary domestic red-ball event in the interim period.
