The Hong Kong Tri Series (OD) functions as a developmental cricket tournament rather than a long-standing historic event. Organised by Cricket Hong Kong (CHK), the competition provides One Day International (ODI) matches for national teams and associate nations. The specific branding for these series emerged during the 2023/24 cycle, designed to offer competitive warm-up fixtures. The structure typically involves three participating sides engaging in a round-robin format where each team plays two matches. Following the group stage, the top two teams contest a final, while the third-place side may play a playoff against Hong Kong A. This arrangement ensures all participants receive substantial game time. In the 2023/24 edition, Malaysia secured victory by defeating Canada in the final. The subsequent 2024/25 iteration saw Hong Kong claim the title after beating Uganda, while Hong Kong A defeated Bahrain in the third-place match. These tournaments are designated as both ODI and List A matches, serving as critical preparation for larger events such as the ICC World Cup Qualifiers. The inclusion of teams like Canada and Uganda distinguishes the event from exclusively Asian regional leagues, allowing for broader international exposure. This setup differs significantly from the CHK Premier League, which remains the primary domestic pathway for local clubs including the Hong Kong Cricket Club and Kowloon Cricket Club. It also stands apart from the Hong Kong Cricket Sixes, a separate six-a-side entertainment event founded in 1992 that focuses on short-format play for television audiences rather than ranking points. The series operates as a bilateral and multilateral arrangement aimed at player development. By integrating associate nations into the schedule, Cricket Hong Kong facilitates experience for its players and visiting teams alike. The results contribute to team rankings and help identify form ahead of major qualifiers. The involvement of Hong Kong A in certain playoffs highlights the link between the international series and the domestic structure, ensuring continuity in the development pathway for cricketers within the territory.
