Indonesia in Malaysia 2026/27

The cricket engagement between Indonesia and Malaysia is not defined by a single, standing bilateral competition with a unique named trophy. Instead, the two nations compete primarily through two distinct channels: bilateral T20I series and multi-team regional tournaments, most notably the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games.

The term "Indonesia in Malaysia" refers to bilateral touring series. The most recent prominent instance was the Indonesia Tour of Malaysia 2026, a four-match T20I series held in May 2026 at the Bayuemas Oval in Kuala Lumpur. Malaysia won this series, taking the first two matches by 6 and 5 wickets respectively. For women's cricket, a bilateral series was also held in May 2026, which Indonesia Women won 2-0.

In contrast, the SEA Games is the primary recurring tournament where both nations meet. Cricket made its debut at the SEA Games in 2017 and became a regular medal sport again in 2023 and 2025. The format for SEA Games cricket varies by edition but typically involves a group stage followed by knockout rounds for Men's and Women's T20 and 50-over formats. The 2023 Men's T20 tournament featured 8 teams.

The first recorded official international T20I match between the senior men's teams took place on May 2, 2023, during the 2023 SEA Games in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Malaysia won that match by 94 runs. Prior to this, while both nations participated in the 2017 SEA Games, they did not face each other in a recorded senior international fixture in the available records.

Malaysia holds a significant advantage in the rivalry, having won all recorded recent bilateral matches in 2026 and the 2023 SEA Games encounter. The rivalry is described as a "classic ASEAN cricket rivalry," but it is characterized by Malaysia's historical dominance and Indonesia's emerging status as a competitive associate nation.

Unlike the "Ashes" or "Border-Gavaskar Trophy," this engagement lacks a permanent trophy. It differs from domestic leagues as it is strictly international. It is also distinct from the ACC Men's T20 World Cup Qualifier pathways, as these two nations often meet in the lower-tier regional qualifiers or multi-sport events rather than the main ACC continental championships.
