Ireland Emerging Players in West Indies 2023/24

The Ireland Emerging Players in West Indies is an ad-hoc bilateral developmental tour arranged between Cricket Ireland and Cricket West Indies. It is not a standalone, recurring annual competition with a fixed founding date or permanent structure. The primary recorded instance occurred in November–December 2023. The Ireland Emerging Players toured the West Indies for a series that included three One-Day Internationals and two Four-Day matches. These fixtures are designated as “unofficial” and do not carry full international status for the participants.

The Ireland Emerging Players squad functions as a developmental pathway bridge. It connects the domestic Inter-Provincial structure, specifically the “Emerging Player” contract tier, to the senior Ireland national team. This setup is distinct from the Ireland Wolves, which serves as the official second-tier national team. On the opposing side, the West Indies Academy competes in regional competitions like the Super50 Cup. The Academy was established in 2019 and was formerly known as the West Indies Emerging Team.

The focus of these matches lies on skill acquisition and exposure to different conditions, such as Caribbean pitches for Irish players. The series differs from senior cricket in that it does not involve official ICC rankings or championship points. In the 2023 series, the West Indies Academy defeated the Ireland Emerging Players in the One-Day Internationals 2–1 and won both Four-Day matches. A reciprocal tour, the West Indies Academy in Ireland, took place in June 2024. Ireland Emerging Players won that encounter. No editions prior to 2023 or subsequent editions beyond the 2024 reciprocal tour were found in available records.
