The Japan Twenty20 Tri-Series is an international cricket tournament organized by the Japan Cricket Association. It operates outside the domestic league structure, which features local clubs, and instead serves as a developmental platform for associate nations in the Asia-Pacific region. The competition blends Asian teams with Pacific Island nations, providing competitive practice through bilateral or tri-series matches rather than functioning as part of a larger pyramid system with promotion or relegation.
The inaugural edition took place in May 2025 at the Sano International Cricket Ground in Sano, Tochigi. The participating teams in this first edition were Japan, Thailand, and the Cook Islands. Matches were designated as Twenty20 Internationals by the International Cricket Council, meaning they counted towards official international rankings. The tournament format consisted of a round-robin group stage where each team played four matches, with no knockout finals. In that edition, Thailand won the tournament based on the points table.
A second edition was held in June 2026. This iteration featured Japan, Indonesia, and Hong Kong. Japan won the final against Indonesia in this subsequent tournament. The event is not directly linked to major ICC qualification pathways like the T20 World Cup League 2. No specific corporate title sponsor was identified, with the event often referred to by the venue name, Sano International T20I Tri-Series.
