Mongolia tour of Japan, 2024 was a bilateral Twenty20 International (T20I) series contested between the Japan national cricket team and the Mongolia national cricket team. Played in May, the fixture served as the first official international cricket encounter between the two nations. Japan, an established associate member since 1989, hosted the series at the Sano International Cricket Ground in Sano. Mongolia, who gained full ICC associate membership only in 2021, undertook its first overseas tour.
The series comprised seven matches scheduled from May 7 to May 12. Japan won the series 6-0, with one match abandoned due to rain. The disparity in experience was evident early; in the second match, Mongolia was bowled out for 12 runs, marking the second-lowest total in T20I history. Mongolia had made its T20I debut only months earlier at the 2023 Asian Games, while Japan had been developing its program for decades under the Japan Cricket Association (JCA).
Organised by the JCA, founded in 1984, the tour highlighted the developmental gap between the two associate members. The Mongolia Cricket Association (MCA), established in 2007, sent its team to compete against a side with a longer history in the sport. The results underscored the challenges faced by newer teams entering the international arena. Japan’s dominance in the series reflected its status as a more mature cricketing nation within the associate ranks. The series provided Mongolia with valuable exposure, though the outcomes were decisive. The matches were hosted in Japan, offering local fans a chance to see international cricket. The event remains notable for being the inaugural meeting between these two specific sides.
