About

The Inter-Insular cricket rivalry is a bilateral series contested between the national teams of Jersey and Guernsey. Unlike standard domestic competitions, this fixture is not part of the English domestic cricket pyramid. Instead, both islands operate as independent Associate Members of the International Cricket Council (ICC). This status allows them to play official Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is) against each other, creating a unique scenario for international sport.

The competition consists of two distinct formats. The traditional 50-over One-Day match is known as the Inter-Insular Trophy. The Twenty20 series carries the name of the Inter-Insular Cup. The modern representative series began in 1950, organized informally by the local cricket clubs following earlier schoolboy matches. The 50-over match is played annually, usually in September, with venues alternating between the two islands. The T20I series, introduced more recently in 2018, typically consists of three matches played in June or July.

Jersey is the dominant force in the rivalry. They have won the 50-over Trophy 37 times since 1950 compared to Guernsey's 21 wins. There have been 19 draws and three years where no match was played. Jersey also holds the majority of T20I victories, although Guernsey secured its first T20I win in the series in 2024.

The fixture is unique in cricket for being a bilateral international contest between two political entities that are geographically close and share a monarch but are not part of the same sovereign state's domestic structure. There is no promotion or relegation, as the teams are fixed national representative sides. The official governing bodies are the Jersey Cricket Board and the Guernsey Cricket Board, which jointly organize the logistics without a single central authority for the fixture. This arrangement distinguishes the event from other regional sporting rivalries that rely on hierarchical league structures for progression and status.
