The Lanka Premier League is a professional franchise Twenty20 cricket competition in Sri Lanka, established in 2020 by Sri Lanka Cricket. It operates independently of the traditional domestic pyramid, which utilises promotion and relegation, relying instead on a fixed franchise model. The league features five city-based teams: Colombo Kings, Dambulla Vikings, Galle Titans, Jaffna Stallions, and Kandy Tuskers.
The tournament format consists of a double round-robin group stage followed by a four-team playoff system comprising a Qualifier 1, an Eliminator, a Qualifier 2, and a Final. This structure ensures the top four sides compete for the championship title through elimination matches rather than a simple league table. The competition is distinct from Sri Lanka's traditional domestic cricket by its commercial focus and inclusion of international stars. A key feature is the auction-based player acquisition system introduced in 2023, marking a shift from a previous draft method for recruitment.
Historical context includes changes in franchise ownership and naming conventions over time. Teams such as Jaffna and Galle have undergone name variations, previously appearing as Jaffna Kings and Galle Marvels respectively. The league's competitive history highlights specific successes for certain franchises. Jaffna holds the record for most titles with four wins, securing victories in 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2024. The current champion is the Galle Gallants, who won the 2026 edition.
Marketing and operational rights were initially awarded to the Innovative Production Group, a Dubai-based company. This arrangement has shaped the commercial landscape of the event. The league sits as the top-tier domestic T20 competition, offering a platform separate from the Major Clubs League and National Super League. While the traditional system feeds clubs through performance, the LPL provides a consistent environment for players and fans alike. The focus remains on entertainment and high-level cricket within the island nation's sporting calendar.
