About

The Major Clubs Limited Over Tournament operates as the top-tier domestic limited-overs club competition in Sri Lanka. Organized by Sri Lanka Cricket, the tournament sits below the first-class Major League Tournament within the domestic pyramid. It is distinct from its first-class counterpart in both format and status. The competition provides a pathway for relegated teams from the Major Clubs League and Limited Over tournaments to the Governor’s Trophy.

Established in the 2020–21 season, the event replaced the long-running Premier Limited Overs Tournament. This restructuring followed administrative changes by Sri Lanka Cricket. The inaugural edition took place in March 2021. While the competition typically features between 18 and 26 first-class clubs, recent adjustments have reduced the number of participating teams to 18. This reduction aims to streamline the competition.

The format generally involves dividing teams into two groups. The top two teams from each group advance to a knockout stage consisting of semi-finals and a final. Matches are played in the 50-over List A format. Relegation exists from the Major Clubs tournaments to the Governor’s Trophy. The lowest-ranked teams in the Major Clubs League and Limited Over tournaments are relegated to the Governor’s Trophy. However, a formal automatic promotion mechanism from the Governor’s Trophy back to the Major Clubs Limited Over Tournament is not explicitly defined in current structures.

Sinhalese Sports Club is recognized as the most successful club in the history of Sri Lankan domestic limited-overs cricket. According to available records, the club has won eight titles in the Premier Limited Overs Tournament era and one title in the Major Clubs era. This brings their total to nine titles. The current champion, as of the 2025 season, is Colombo Cricket Club. They defeated Police Sports Club by 187 runs in the final. Notable recent winners include Tamil Union Cricket and Athletic Club and Ace Capital Cricket Club. The tournament has undergone several name changes and format adjustments over the years. Editions were suspended or cancelled in various seasons due to administrative or legal issues. The official website for the competition is srilankacricket.lk.
