Nugegoda Sports Welfare Club

De Zoysa Stadium sits in Moratuwa rather than Nugegoda itself, a ground known almost as widely under its other name, Tyronne Fernando Stadium. It is there that Nugegoda Sports and Welfare Club takes its cricket, a first-class side.

NSWC plays across the full spread of Sri Lanka's domestic structure, from the Major Clubs Emerging tournament through to the T20 competition — the Major League Tournament, the Major Clubs Limited Overs and the Major Clubs T20 all sit at zero wins. What the club has produced instead are players who moved on to bigger things. Nuwan Kulasekara came through the under-23 side, and more recently Sharujan Shanmuganathan, a left-handed wicketkeeper-batsman nicknamed "Little Sanga," made his first-class debut here in September 2023 before his selection for the Under-19 World Cup squad the following year.

The runs have come too, if less often noticed outside the club. Roshan Wijenayake made 201 not out in the Major League Tournament in 2025, and Avishka Perera's century the previous season. Tillakaratne Sampath now captains the first-class side, following on from Denuwan Rajakaruna, who led the team out for its first-class debut back in 2020.

The club's identity stays tied to Moratuwa's stadium and to Nugegoda itself, the place whose name it still carries onto every scorecard.
