Burgher Recreation Club

On 26 December 1896 a group of young Burghers in Colombo formed a cricket club that would take their community's name only two decades later, playing first as the Bambalapitiya Recreation Club. Membership was drawn strictly from the city's Burgher community, and the club carried that identity through a move to Havelock Park in 1902. It was not until 31 May 1915 that the club settled on the name Burgher Recreation Club, and on that same day swapped Black, Red and Gold for the Black, Red and Champagne it still wears.

The honours board is thin but old. BRC were named cricket champions in 1925, then took the P. Saravanamuttu Trophy — the first-class title of its day — in the 1955–56 season. Decades passed before the next line was added: the CSN Premier Clubs T20 Tournament, won in 2011/12 against Colts Cricket Club.

BRC still plays out of the ground it moved to in 1902, known both by the club's name and as Havelock Park.

Few names carry more weight at BRC than Jayantha Paranathala, who played for the club through the 1970s and then ran it as president from 1987 to 2015 — the better part of thirty years spent guiding the institution he once represented on the field. Among those who came through more recently, fast bowler Nuwan Pradeep, who made his international debut in 2011, is the BRC name most likely to be recognised outside Colombo.
