Tamil Union Cricket and Athletic Club

The club itself grew out of a merger, two rival Tamil sides, the Lanka Sports Club and a second club formed in March 1899, coming together that December at Campbell Park. Its ground, the Paikiasothy Saravanamuttu Stadium in Borella, took shape more slowly: marshy land acquired in 1937 under club stalwart Saravanamuttu, drained and built up before opening in 1940. Don Bradman's touring side played there in 1948, and Sri Lanka's first Test, in 1982, was staged on the same square; the country's first Test win, over India in 1985, followed on it.

The Black July riots of 1983 reached the ground itself, the pavilion and the club's archives burnt and ransacked, and international cricket largely moved elsewhere for a decade. Tamil Union rebuilt through the 1990s and 2000s, adding a media centre and gym, and by 2002 the ground was trusted again with the biggest fixtures, hosting the first neutral Test played in Sri Lanka, Australia against Pakistan.

Muttiah Muralitharan wore the violet cap for 21 seasons before becoming Test cricket's leading wicket-taker.

None of it carries the edge of the fixture against Colombo Cricket Club.
