«NCC»
Kumar Sangakkara came up through Nondescripts, and the club has never let anyone forget it. The list of internationals who wore NCC colours before Sri Lanka's runs long — Lasith Malinga, Dinesh Chandimal, Aravinda de Silva, Upul Tharanga among them.
When NCC was formed in 1888, Colombo's clubs ran along ethnic lines; NCC took its name specifically to mean the opposite, a club that would not ask who you were before letting you play. The club is now spoken of as one of the "Holy Trinity" of Sri Lankan cricket, alongside the Sinhalese Sports Club and the Colombo Cricket Club.
The ground itself came later, in 1910, built on land reclaimed from swamp at Maitland Place; a new pavilion went up there in 2007.
