The Major Club Three-Day Plate Championship had eluded Kurunegala Youth Cricket Club until the 2025/26 season, when the side beat Chilaw Marians CC by five wickets in the final at the Surrey Grounds, Maggona. The main Major League Tournament stayed out of reach that year — Sinhalese Sports Club and Police Sports Club shared that title.

KYCC took its place in first-class cricket in 1991, facing Tamil Union Cricket and Athletic Club, and added List A cricket the following year before entering Twenty20 competition in 2004. The club works out of Welagedara Stadium in Kurunegala, a ground that holds around 10,000 spectators.

Matches against Kurunegala Sports Club carry a weight the rest of the calendar does not: the two sides share a city, and the fixture is known locally as the hometown derby.

The name most tied to the club is Rangana Herath, who started out at Kurunegala Youth Cricket Club before becoming one of the finest spin bowlers Test cricket has seen.
