About

The Mdina Cup is a bilateral or tri-series Twenty20 International (T20I) cricket tournament contested primarily between the national teams of Malta and Belgium, often joined by France or Luxembourg. Organized by the European Cricket Network (ECN), the competition serves as a preparatory platform for participating nations aiming to reach ICC regional qualifiers. The tournament format typically involves a double round-robin group stage among the participating nations, with the top teams advancing to a final. Matches in the Mdina Cup carry full T20I status granted by the ICC.

The inaugural edition was held in July 2023 in Malta, featuring Malta, France, and Luxembourg. The second edition took place in May 2024 in France, with Belgium, France, and Malta participating. The 2025 edition was hosted by Belgium. Belgium won the 2021 bilateral series 3-2 and the 2022 series 3-0. The Belgian Cricket Federation was founded in 1990, having been re-established after a pre-World War II iteration. The Malta Cricket Association joined the ICC in 1998. The Royal Brussels Cricket Club, a key Belgian club, dates back to 1866.

While the Mdina Cup is development-focused, it operates alongside the official ICC Men's T20 World Cup Europe Qualifier, formerly the ICC European T20 Championship, which is the formal, high-stakes pathway for European nations to qualify for the global World Cup. The Mdina Cup provides a lower-stakes environment for these teams to compete at the international level. The competition continues to grow in stature, bringing together emerging cricketing nations from Europe to foster development and improve their standing in the sport. Participants benefit from playing against each other regularly, enhancing their competitive experience and skill level ahead of more significant tournaments.
