About

The National Counties T20 Competition is a domestic Twenty20 cricket tournament in England and Wales, organized by the National Counties Cricket Association. It sits at the fourth tier of the English domestic pyramid, below the professional T20 Blast, the One-Day Cup, and the County Championship. The competition is contested exclusively by the 24 National Counties, which include 19 historic English counties without first-class status alongside the Wales National County Cricket Club and others such as Buckinghamshire, Norfolk, and Bedfordshire. Historically, the event ran as the Minor Counties T20 Trophy before the governing body rebranded in 2020 to remove pejorative connotations and improve commercial viability. The current T20 format was relaunched in 2021 after a period of discontinuation.

Participation is based on NCCA membership status rather than performance, meaning there is no promotion or relegation. The structure has evolved over time. While it once consisted of four regional groups of five teams with winners advancing to a Finals Day, recent iterations introduced a "Super 12s" stage. After the initial group stage, qualifiers enter a round-robin Super 12s group, with the top teams progressing to a Finals Day knockout tournament. The 2025 Finals Day was held on August 24 at Wormsley. Berkshire won that title, defeating Bedfordshire by one run in the final. Berkshire is the most successful team in the modern era, having won the titles in 2022, 2023, and 2025. The competition serves as the premier T20 outlet for non-first-class counties, focusing on development and local engagement rather than professional spectacle.
