The Philippines in Japan competition is not a single, continuous domestic league. Cricket in the Philippines and South Korea is organized separately under their respective national associations. These nations interact primarily through international tournaments organized by the International Cricket Council within the East Asia-Pacific region.
A primary competitive structure is the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup East Asia-Pacific Qualifier pathway. This is a periodic qualification tournament rather than a standing league. For the 2026 cycle, the structure evolved into a combined Asia and EAP Qualifier held in Oman. Prior to this, teams competed in sub-regional qualifiers. In 2024, the Philippines and South Korea faced Japan and Indonesia in a round-robin tournament hosted by South Korea. Japan won that qualifier. In earlier cycles, the two nations competed in Group B of the EAP Qualifier.
A distinct, newer tournament is the Bali Bash International Tri Series. First held in July 2025 in Bali, Indonesia, this event featured Indonesia, the Philippines, and South Korea in a T20I format. The Philippines won the series. Unlike the ICC qualifiers, this was a standalone regional series hosted by the Indonesian Cricket Association. Another relevant competition is the East Asia Cup, a T20 tournament organized by national associations including Japan, Hong Kong, China, and South Korea. The Philippines is not a regular participant in this specific cup, as it is geographically and administratively distinct from the East Asia grouping.
There is no promotion or relegation system between these competitions as they are not part of a hierarchical pyramid. They function as parallel qualification pathways or standalone invitational series. The level of these competitions is international amateur and associate status, governed by ICC regulations. Japan remains the most successful team in recent EAP qualifiers involving these two nations, having won the 2024 title. South Korea has historically been the stronger cricketing nation in the East Asia Cup context, winning the men's title in 2016. However, the Philippines has shown recent improvement in EAP qualifiers, securing victory in the 2018–19 Group B.
