The Spain Tri-Series is a sporadic cricket tournament held in Spain, organized by Cricket España in partnership with the European Cricket Network under the European Cricket Initiative banner. It serves as a warm-up event for Associate Member nations preparing for ICC World Cup qualifiers rather than a permanent league structure.
The tournament operates in a round-robin format with no promotion or relegation within the series itself. This distinguishes it from the European Cricket Championship, which functions as a multi-division league for promotion and relegation. The European Cricket Network acts as the commercial organizer and broadcaster, while national federations host and field teams. There is no single permanent sponsor, though the event is branded under the European Cricket Initiative.
The inaugural edition took place in March 2019 at La Manga Club in Cartagena, featuring Spain, Malta, and an Estonia XI. Spain won that tournament, with Awais Ahmed scoring the first T20I century for the country. A prominent edition involving Guernsey and Norway occurred in April 2022 at the Desert Springs Cricket Ground in Almería. In that competition, Spain won the tournament, finishing ahead of Guernsey and Norway.
Notable records from the 2022 Guernsey and Norway edition include Lorne Burns taking the first five-wicket haul by a Spanish bowler in T20Is and Sher Sahak scoring 99 runs not out for Norway. A subsequent edition in November 2022 featured Spain, Germany, and Italy, with Germany winning. The series differs from the European Cricket Championship, which is a multi-division league for promotion/relegation; the Tri-Series is a standalone, short-format tournament focused on preparation. The ECN acts as the commercial organizer and broadcaster, while national federations like Cricket España host and field teams. The tournament has no single permanent sponsor, though it is branded under ECI.
