T20 World Cup Sub Regional Africa Qualifier A serves as the initial gateway for African nations seeking a place in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup. Introduced for the 2024 cycle, the tournament replaced previous sub-regional groupings to streamline the qualification process. The first edition took place in Rwanda in October 2022, establishing a new structure overseen by the International Cricket Council (ICC) through its regional body, the Africa Cricket Association (ACA).
The competition operates as a preliminary qualifier rather than a standalone league. Six teams participate in each edition, selected based on ICC rankings and administrative allocation. There is no formal promotion or relegation between the different sub-regional qualifiers. In the 2024 edition, hosted in Tanzania, the participating nations were Cameroon, Ghana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mali, and Tanzania. The format consists of a single round-robin group stage where every team plays every other team exactly once. This structure generates fifteen matches in total for each tournament.
The primary objective is to secure advancement to the Africa Regional Final. The top two finishers from Qualifier A earn the right to compete alongside other sub-regional winners and higher-ranked teams, such as Namibia, for the remaining World Cup spots. In the 2024 tournament, Tanzania finished first with five wins, while Malawi secured the second position with four victories. Both teams progressed to the next stage. The 2022 edition was won by Rwanda.
This qualification pathway is distinct from the ICC Africa T20 Cup, which functions as a development tournament for franchise and national teams without direct links to World Cup qualification. The Sub Regional Qualifier A remains specifically focused on identifying the teams that will join the decisive regional final.
