The Marylebone Cricket Club University Matches (MCCU Matches) constitute a series of pre-season fixtures in England and Wales. Organized by the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) and sanctioned by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), the competition serves as a developmental pathway and warm-up for the County Championship season. The matches are typically three-day or four-day fixtures played at the start of the domestic season.
University teams in the competition originated from the University Centre of Cricketing Excellence (UCCE), established by the ECB in 2000. These centres were transferred to the MCC in 2004, becoming MCCU in 2010. Historically, these matches held first-class status, allowing them to count towards player records and county statistics. This status was removed after the 2020 season when the ECB took direct control of the centres. Consequently, the matches are now non-first-class.
The competition involves six university representative teams playing against first-class County Championship sides. In addition to these county fixtures, the MCCU teams compete in the MCC Universities Championship, a two-day league competition among themselves, and the MCC Universities Challenge, a knockout tournament. Leeds/Bradford MCCU is cited as a recent winner of the internal MCCU Championship (2019), and Durham MCCU has won the Challenge Final.
The competition is unique in bridging amateur university cricket with professional county structures. Unlike the County Championship, MCCU matches are not part of a unified league table for the championship title but are individual fixtures designed for player development and county preparation. The participating teams include Glamorgan, Warwickshire, Leeds/Bradford MCCU, Yorkshire, Loughborough MCCU, and Northamptonshire.
