About

The Valletta Cup is an annual Twenty20 International (T20I) cricket tournament hosted in Malta by the Malta Cricket Association. Founded in 2019, the event serves as an invitational competition for associate members of the International Cricket Council (ICC) in Europe. Unlike domestic leagues that operate on a tiered pyramid with promotion and relegation, this tournament functions solely as a platform for international matches. The action typically takes place at the Marsa Sports Club in Marsa. The structure comprises a round-robin group stage followed by knockout finals, which include a championship match and a third-place playoff. Participation has evolved since inception. The inaugural 2019 edition and the 2021 tournament featured four teams. The 2022 edition expanded to six participants, including the Czech Republic, Gibraltar, Hungary, and Romania. Subsequent years have seen varying line-ups; the 2023 contest involved five sides, while the 2024 edition marked a significant shift by featuring only women’s teams for the first time. That year saw five participants, including the Isle of Man and Greece. Historical results show no single nation has claimed the title more than once. The Czech Republic won the opening tournament in 2019, followed by Malta in 2021, Romania in 2022, and Switzerland in 2023. The 2024 crown went to the Isle of Man Women. This rotating pattern of winners underscores the competitive balance within the European associate circuit. For the organizer, the tournament provides a crucial developmental platform, granting T20I status to matches involving ICC-recognized teams, a credential not always present in other regional club competitions. The event continues to adapt its format and participant pool annually.
