Torpedo Kutaisi took a narrow 3-2 victory over Samgurali in the Erovnuli Liga regular season on 14 September, a result that keeps both sides in tight contention for European places.
Irakli Siradze opened the scoring in the fourth minute, and here's the thing — it was the kind of early strike that sets the tone for the whole encounter. Samgurali responded through Giorgi Arabidze in the 22nd minute, though to be fair Torpedo reclaimed the lead almost immediately when Komnen Andrić found the net in the 26th.
The second half brought more movement, with Samgurali pulling level through Nodar Lominadze in the 67th minute before Omar Patarkatsishvili's late header in stoppage time would have looked like a drawbreaker. By then the managers had already made their changes, with six substitutions thrown in during a frantic 66th minute alone.
Samgurali controlled possession at 55 per cent and registered 10 shots on target against Torpedo's 5, yet the visitors were punished for their wastefulness. Torpedo's five shots on target produced three goals, while the hosts' efficiency masked a game that could easily have gone either way.
The result leaves Torpedo Kutaisi in sixth place on 36 points after 26 matches, one victory above Samgurali who remain seventh on 32 points. Both sides have played the same number of games, and the four-point gap suggests this season's race for European qualification will run to the final whistle.
