About

The Erovnuli Liga operates as the premier professional football competition in Georgia, sitting at the apex of the national pyramid. Organized by the Georgian Football Federation, which traces its history back to 1936, the tournament serves as the primary route for the country's top clubs to qualify for the UEFA Champions League.

The structure of the season underwent significant change in 2017, when organizers replaced the traditional autumn-spring calendar with a spring-autumn format. This reform also reduced the field to ten teams, establishing a system where each club faces its opponents twice over the course of 36 matches. There are no championship play-offs; the team that accumulates the most points by the end of the campaign claims the title outright.

Promotion and relegation involve a complex tie-breaker system. The club finishing in tenth place drops directly to the second tier. Meanwhile, the sides in ninth and eighth place enter two-legged play-off ties against the runners-up and third-place teams from the lower division, respectively.

Dinamo Tbilisi stands as the most successful entity in the league's history since independence, holding nineteen titles. The competition was originally known as the Umaglesi Liga before being renamed to reflect a broader structural reform. It remains distinct from the Georgian Cup, which is a knockout tournament open to all divisions and functions as a qualifier for the UEFA Europa Conference League.
