Dinamo Batumi

The two local teams, MzeGauri and Tskiteli Randi, merged on 30 November 1923 to create a new entity in Batumi. That improvisation became Dinamo Batumi . The name changed to simply Batumi in 1990, before reverting to the historical title in 1994.

The club’s recent history, however, sits on different ground. After winning the second-tier championship in 2018, Dinamo returned to the top flight. The 2021 season brought the first Georgian Premier League title in 24 years. Three years later, they repeated the feat.

Stability arrived with the opening of the AjaraBet Arena in October 2020. The 4-star UEFA venue holds 20 035 spectators, providing a proper home for the Pirates.

The club’s reputation is tied to its rivalry with Tbilisi’s Dinamo. The Batumians lost four consecutive cup finals against their capital counterparts between 1992 and 1997. The streak ended in 1998 when they lifted the Georgian Cup. They have since added a Super Cup in 2022, but the emotional weight of the 1998 win persists.

Young talent has always flowed through the club, even if the stars eventually leave.
