Kevin Pietersen joins England white-ball coaching staff
Michael Vaughan says appointing Kevin Pietersen as England's white-ball mentor is a risk worth taking, over a decade after his acrimonious 2014 exit.
Pietersen was effectively sacked following a bust-up with England's management in 2014. He has coaching credentials with Delhi Capitals in the IPL, though he made news there in 2025 for taking a Maldives holiday Midway through the tournament — the same Delhi Capitals side that currently sit sixth in the IPL table with 14 points from 14 matches. Since retiring in 2018 he has worked mainly in broadcasting, and last January criticised England's limited-overs set-up over its preparation for a tour of India.
He is in situ at the Utilita Bowl ahead of England's T20 series against Sri Lanka, which begins on Tuesday, with his role running through to next year's ODI World Cup — a tournament held largely in his native South Africa.
Vaughan, who captained England to the 2005 Ashes, said Pietersen had been treated unfairly in 2014 compared with others who committed similar indiscretions and were welcomed back into the English game.
