Brendon McCullum warns England white-ball squad on discipline

Brendon McCullum has told England's white-ball players that the freedoms of the "Bazball" era come with conditions attached, opening his new job-share with Stephen Fleming with a warning about discipline.

Monday marked the start of a split coaching structure for English cricket. Fleming, the new red-ball head coach, arrived in the Country for a two-week stay that includes meetings with ECB officials, an introduction to Test captain Joe Root and conversations with county cricket figures. He is due to join McCullum's limited-overs squad in Manchester before the third T20 against Sri Lanka on Saturday.

McCullum spoke ahead of a series opener at the Utilita Bowl, and made clear that the tightening of standards already under way in the Test set-up under Root will apply equally to his white-ball group.

"I hope it's crystal clear what is expected, not just of this group, but of those who have got aspirations to play for us," he said. "We want to play a style of cricket that comes with responsibilities. That's just life living in the fast lane of international cricket. There is a lot of talent around, if you're not prepared to do that, there are other guys who will be given those opportunities."

Brydon Carse has been left out of every format since he was arrested, then de-arrested, outside a nightclub in Derby last month. McCullum referred to the case directly.

"I've spoken to Carsey a lot and it's the same message. You need to make good decisions off the field that allow you to be able to be the best version of yourself. As far as Carsey is concerned, it's a good chance for him now to get his house in order and then push for selection for the next op..."

Fleming's arrival gives the new structure its first shape on the ground. What it means in practice for team selection, starting with Carse's route back, should become clearer once he and McCullum are working from the same dressing room in Manchester.
