About the player
They call him 'Mono' Sánchez, and by the time Coquimbo Unido lifted the 2026 Supercopa de Chile against Universidad Católica, he had given the club a moment nobody there will forget: two penalties saved in the shootout, one of them stopped without gloves. It capped a run that had already delivered something the club had never had before — the 2025 Primera División title, with Sánchez named to that season's Ideal Team.
He arrived at Coquimbo in January 2023. Sánchez started out at Palestino in 2007, then moved through loan and permanent spells at Unión Temuco, Deportes Temuco and Barnechea before joining Unión San Felipe in 2011, a stay that ended in relegation the following year.
He arrived at Unión Española in 2013 and stayed until the end of 2021, wearing the captain's armband and winning the Primera División in the Transición championship of that year along with the Supercopa de Chile. He spent 2022 at Deportes Antofagasta before the move south to Coquimbo.
His only taste of the national team came in November 2014, when Jorge Sampaoli called him into the Chile squad for friendlies against Venezuela and Uruguay. He remained an unused substitute in both matches and has yet to win a senior cap.
