At an age when most midfielders have long since retired, Nenê is still lacing up his boots, having joined Botafogo-PB on a one-year contract. He wears the number 10 shirt.

That European stretch included spells at Mallorca, Alavés, Celta Vigo, Monaco, Espanyol and Paris Saint-Germain, where he won the Coupe de France and the Coupe de la Ligue. He also had a period in England with West Ham United and in Qatar with Al-Gharafa before returning to Brazil.

Back home, Vasco da Gama is where Nenê left his deepest mark. He won the Copa do Brasil and the Campeonato Carioca with the club and is regarded there as an idol, a status recognised with the title of citizen of honour of Rio de Janeiro. He later turned out for São Paulo, Fluminense and Juventude before his move to Botafogo-PB.

At youth level, Nenê represented Brazil's under-20 side, scoring twice in seven appearances, and later played four times for the under-23s, scoring once. He never went on to add senior caps to that record. What stands out now is simple longevity: still playing professionally past his mid-forties.
