«The Niners»
Joe Montana took over a San Francisco club that had never won a championship in its first three and a half decades in the league, leading the 49ers to Super Bowl wins after the 1981, 1984 and 1988 seasons. Steve Young added a fourth title after the 1989 season and a fifth after the 1994 season.
The club took shape in 1944, when lumber magnate Tony Morabito put together a charter franchise for the All-America Football Conference, and it began play two years later as the first major professional sports team based in San Francisco. Its name reached back further still, to the prospectors who poured into California in 1849.
Thirty members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame have worn the uniform. Brock Purdy and Christian McCaffrey have driven an offense chasing a sixth title.
Home games are played in front of 68,500 in Santa Clara, at Levi's Stadium, where capacity stretches toward 75,000 when the occasion calls for it.
