Johnson Hagood Stadium sits inside The Citadel's campus on the Charleston peninsula. Renovations completed in 2017 cut capacity to 11,427, down from the 21,000 the stadium once held before the east side stands were closed.
The football program dates to 1905, when Syd Smith coached the school's first intercollegiate season. Four Southern Conference titles have followed, in 1961, 1992, 2015 and 2016, and in 1960 the Bulldogs beat Tennessee Tech 27-0 in the Tangerine Bowl, still the only bowl win in the program's history. The 1992 side went 11-2 and reached number one in the final regular-season I-AA poll before losing in the second round of the playoffs.
Stump Mitchell ran through the Southern Conference from 1977 to 1980 and still holds the school's rushing records before going on to ten NFL seasons. Marc Buoniconti's career took the opposite turn.
On the schedule, Virginia Military Institute carries significant weight. The two service academies play for the Silver Shako, a series The Citadel leads 46-33-2 overall. Furman has faced the Bulldogs since 1913 and leads that series 65-37-3, while Wofford holds the edge in the Big Dog Trophy meetings even though The Citadel leads their all-time record.
