Texas A&M's football program grew out of a land-grant military college on the Texas prairie, and it took the field for the first time in 1894, going 1–1 under F. Dudley Perkins. What the Aggies carried forward from those years was not a trophy but a habit: in 1922, with the roster depleted by injury, coach Dana X. Bible pulled student E. King Gill from the stands and suited him up in case he was needed. He never played that day, but the school built the "12th Man" tradition around him, and it still frames how College Station understands its own crowd's role in a game.

The maroon on the jerseys is itself an accident — a supplier's error in the late 1920s replaced what had been red and white, and the mistake stuck. On the field, the Aggies' best years belonged to the Southwest Conference, where they took the title seventeen times between 1917 and 1993, alongside three claimed national championships in 1919, 1927 and 1939. The 1919 team went undefeated and unscored upon; the 1957 title came under Bear Bryant. A single Big 12 championship followed in 1998 before the move to the Southeastern Conference in 2012, a debut season the Aggies marked by beating a No. 1-ranked Alabama.

Kyle Field now holds 102,733, and the rivalry with the Texas Longhorns, the Lone Star Showdown, runs back to that first 1894 season. Among the names to come through the program, Johnny Manziel's 2012 Heisman Trophy stands out for how suddenly it arrived, a redshirt freshman turning a rebuilding year into a national story. The record books still carry the 2018 game against LSU, seven overtimes and a 74–72 finish, the highest-scoring game in the sport's top division. Since joining the SEC, the Aggies have yet to add a conference title there, which remains the target the program is still working toward.
