Lakers

Erie sits on the lake it takes its name from, a small Pennsylvania city where Mercyhurst University fields its football team out of Saxon Stadium, a 2,300-seat ground with metal bleachers and artificial turf on campus. The program moved there in 1996 after fifteen seasons at the much larger Erie Veterans Memorial Stadium.

The Lakers took the field for the first time in 1981 under Tony DeMeo, who left seven years later with a 41-21-2 record. Marty Schaetzle then carried the program through two decades of Division II football built on a power-running style, a stretch that included the only conference title in the club's history: the 2010 PSAC Championship, won on the way to the program's lone appearance in the NCAA Division II Quarterfinals, where Shepherd University ended the run after Mercyhurst had put out Bloomsburg in the previous round.

Across town, Gannon University has long supplied the rivalry that matters most, the two sides meeting for the Niagara Cup since 2004; Gannon held onto it in 2023 with a 31-28 win. The bigger shift arrived in 2024, when the Lakers stepped up from Division II into the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision and the Northeast Conference, a reclassification that keeps them out of the playoff picture until 2028, when full Division I standing arrives.

That transition fell to quarterback Adam Urena and to punter Brendon Kilpatrick, who closed 2024 as the Subdivision's Punter of the Year on a school-record average. Ryan Riemedio coached the team through the move before leaving for a defensive coordinator post at Youngstown State, and this year the sideline passed to Thomas Sydeski, promoted from offensive coordinator at 31 to become one of the youngest head coaches in Division I football.
