The team plays at University Stadium, seating just over 39,000, in cherry and silver. The high point on the field came early: outright Western Athletic Conference titles in 1962, 1963 and 1964, shared with Arizona and Utah. Division titles followed decades later under different conference names, in 1997 and again in 2016, and that 2016 season closed with a New Mexico Bowl win over UTSA, 23-20.
Albuquerque has sent more talent to the NFL than its bowl record might suggest. Brian Urlacher went ninth overall to the Chicago Bears in 2000, made the Hall of Fame, and had his number 44 retired by the program. Robin Cole went in the first round to the Steelers two decades before him.
None of it carries the weight of the game against New Mexico State.
