Central Michigan sits in the Mid-American Conference's West division, with the Victory Cannon rivalry against Western Michigan since 2008.
The programme traces to 1896, when Pete McCormick took the team through a 3–1 first season, four years after the university itself opened as Central Michigan Normal School and Industrial University.
Nine Interstate Intercollegiate Athletic Conference titles arrived between 1952 and 1968, and since joining the Mid-American Conference the Chippewas have added seven league championships, most recently in 2009, with divisional titles following in 2019 and 2021.
Kelly/Shorts Stadium has held 35,127 since a $28 million expansion went up after the 1997 season, and it filled to that exact number only once, for a visit from Michigan State in September 2012.
Dan LeFevour's stretch at quarterback still stands as the NCAA record for games started.
