Howard University's football team, the Bison, competes in the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision as part of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, taking the MEAC crown in both 2022 and 2023 under head coach Larry Scott.

Two CIAA titles from 1912 and 1914 predate even that first run.

Games are played at William H. Greene Stadium, and the fiercest date on the calendar is against Hampton, a meeting both schools call the "Battle of the Real HU." The program's best-known single result, though, came against opposition from outside the conference altogether: in 2017 the Bison went to Las Vegas and beat UNLV 43–40, a result still ranked among the largest point-spread upsets in college football history.

Antoine Bethea and Ron Bartell went on from Howard to NFL careers. Conference titles have come more often than national recognition lately.
