The 2025 team finished 16-0 and beat Miami 27-21 in the College Football Playoff National Championship, Indiana's first national title in a program that had spent most of its history on the other end of the Big Ten Conference table.

Before that, three shared or outright conference championships marked the program's high points: 1945 under Bo McMillin, whose team went 9-0-1, and 1967 under John Pont. Between those two years and 2025, the Hoosiers won bowl games but rarely contended for the conference itself.

Fernando Mendoza took the Heisman Trophy in 2025, the season the rest fell into place: a Peach Bowl win over Oregon, a Rose Bowl win over Alabama, then the championship game itself.

The rivalry with Purdue for the Old Oaken Bucket has run since 1925 and Purdue still leads it, 77 wins to 44. Memorial Stadium, opened in 1960 and now holding 53,524. The program itself dates to 1887, the year after Indiana first put a team on the field against Butler.
