Mean Green

Football at the University of North Texas dates back to a campus still known as a teachers' college. That name arrived decades later, in 1966, when a defense so difficult to move through earned the team its "Mean Green" tag from supporters and reporters rather than from any front office.

The program's fullest stretch came in the early 2000s, when North Texas took four straight conference titles from 2001 to 2004 and capped the run by beating Cincinnati in the New Orleans Bowl. It had waited more than half a century for that kind of bowl success. A Heart of Dallas Bowl win followed in 2014, and the most recent came in 2025, a 49-47 shootout against San Diego State in the New Mexico Bowl.

Two names carry more weight than the rest of the roster. Defensive tackle "Mean" Joe Greene left Denton for a Hall of Fame career and still gives the nickname its edge decades on, and halfback Abner Haynes had his number retired by the program he helped build. Off the field, the university's alumni rolls stretch to Meat Loaf and "Stone Cold" Steve Austin, an odd pairing that says something about how far the campus reputation travels beyond the stadium.

Rivalry weekend against SMU carries its own name, the Safeway Bowl, coined by a former head coach rather than handed down from any conference office. Games are played at DATCU Stadium, built in 2011 and renamed more than once since, where a 2024 reseating trimmed capacity to 30,100 in a corner of Denton where two interstates meet.
