Bobcats

UFCU Stadium sits on the western edge of the Texas State campus, its west grandstand backed by the hills above the San Marcos River, and it holds 28,388 — modest by Sun Belt Conference standards, which is part of why the football program spent so long building its name at a level below the one it plays at now.

The university behind it was chartered by the Texas Legislature on 10 May 1899 as the Southwest Texas State Normal School, and football followed in 1904. For most of the twentieth century the Bobcats built their reputation in the Lone Star Conference, winning it nine times between 1948 and 1983, and that run peaked under Jim Wacker, who took the program to back-to-back NCAA Division II national titles in 1981 and 1982. Two more conference championships came in the Southland Conference in 2005 and 2008, before the climb to Division I FBS status changed what winning meant here. It took until 2023 for the Bobcats to reach their first bowl game at that level, and they made it count, beating Rice 45–21 in the SERVPRO First Responder Bowl.

Geography supplies the fiercest fixture on the schedule: the drive down Interstate 35 to San Antonio for the meeting with UTSA, a rivalry with little shared history but no shortage of edge for it. Older grudges survive too, against Sam Houston and in the so-called Battle for the Paddle with Nicholls.

No Bobcat is remembered the way Ricky Sanders is. He came out of San Marcos to be picked in the first round of the NFL draft and went on to win two Super Bowls at wide receiver in Washington, still the clearest evidence that this small program could produce a player for the biggest stage in the sport.
