«Roadrunners»
The football program at San Antonio's public university did not exist until the school itself had been running for more than four decades: the University of Texas at San Antonio fielded its first Roadrunners team only in 2011.
The Roadrunners share the Alamodome with San Antonio's other tenants, though for football the ground is set at 36,582 seats rather than the stadium's full 64,000. Jeff Traylor, in charge since 2020, is the coach under whom the results caught up with the ambition: back-to-back Conference USA titles in 2021 and 2022, the second built on the West Division crown taken the year before.
Bowl wins have followed since the move to the American Athletic Conference — Marshall beaten 35–17 in the 2023 Frisco Bowl, then Coastal Carolina put away 44–15 in the 2024 Myrtle Beach Bowl. The fixture that still matters most to the fan base, though, predates all of that silverware: the I-35 Rivalry against Texas State, named for the highway linking the two campuses. On the professional side, Marcus Davenport gave the program its marquee moment, going in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft.
Two conference championships arrived within eleven years of the program's first snap.
