Bregenz Handball

The "Ländle-Derby" against Alpla HC Hard carries the weight of Vorarlberg's only real handball rivalry, and Bregenz Handball built the record to back its side of it: nine Austrian Handball League titles between 2001 and 2010, a run that made the club the defining force in the country's game for that decade. The section began in 1946 inside the multi-sport club SC Schwarz-Weiß Bregenz, with Hannes Schneider elected its first chairman and a first match played within a fortnight of founding. In 1989 Bregenz became the first team from Vorarlberg to reach the German Baden-Württemberg Verbandsliga, playing there until 1996, the same year the handball section broke away from Schwarz-Weiß to stand as an independent club.

Bruno Gudelj arrived as player-coach in 1999 and delivered the club's first cup, in 2000, then its first league title two years later, opening the run that the rest of the 2000s belonged to.

The Handball-Akademie Mehrerau, founded in 2004, has since fed graduates through to the first team, and the "Gelbe Wand" still fills the Handball-Arena Rieden-Vorkloster on derby nights — a ground that holds 1,600.
