BSV Sachsen Zwickau Women

Promotion has been the recurring theme of BSV Sachsen Zwickau Frauen's history: the club has gone up from the 2nd Bundesliga twice, in 1995 and again in 2021. The 2021 promotion followed a runners-up finish back in 1993.

The department itself grew out of upheaval rather than ambition. It split off from BSG Aktivist Karl Marx Zwickau on 8 August 1990, in the months after East Germany's political system collapsed, though the handball line running through Zwickau goes back to 1949, when the city's team was already competing in the DDR-Oberliga.

Zwickau's derbies carry a regional weight beyond three points: matches against Thüringer HC and SV Union Halle-Neustadt are known locally as the Mitteldeutschland-Derby, a fixture rooted in the shared handball culture of the old East German heartlands.

Since 2024 the team has played at the Stadthalle Zwickau, also known as the Sparkassen-Arena, after years at the smaller Sporthalle Neuplanitz.
