The club started out in 1999, spent the early 2000s tied to the Technical University of Chemnitz under the name BV TU Chemnitz 99, and only settled on Niners Chemnitz in 2017, borrowing the nickname straight from the "99" in its old title.

Rodrigo Pastore took the team up to the Basketball Bundesliga in 2020, after Chemnitz had already topped the ProA regular season the year before and again in a season the pandemic cut short. Four years later, under his guidance, the club won its first major trophy: the FIBA Europe Cup, beaten Bahçeşehir Koleji in the 2023–24 final.

Domestically, the Niners have yet to add a Bundesliga or ProA title to that European run — they came closest with a runners-up finish in the German Cup in 2021–22.

All of it still comes back to Chemnitz.
