«The Birds»
The Birds go back to 1933, long enough to have won three NFL championships before the Super Bowl era existed at all, in 1948, 1949 and 1960. Between those two eras sits the near-miss of 2004, when Donovan McNabb and Terrell Owens drove a 13–3 team to Super Bowl XXXIX only to lose to New England — a defeat Philadelphia would not answer for another thirteen years.
Reggie White spent seven seasons terrorising quarterbacks off the Eagles' defensive line before his Hall of Fame career took him elsewhere, and Chuck Bednarik played both centre and linebacker in an era that no longer produces players built that way.
None of it means as much in Philadelphia as the Cowboys. The Eagles–Cowboys rivalry runs through the NFC East with no love lost on either side, and it is Dallas, not Kansas City or New England, that the fanbase measures a season against — the Giants come around twice a year too, but it is the games against Dallas that decide bragging rights.
