«The Birds»
The Eagles took shape in 1933, when Bert Bell and Lud Wray bought up the assets of the bankrupt Frankford Yellow Jackets and needed a name; Bell settled on "Eagles" after the Blue Eagle symbol of the National Recovery Administration, a Depression-era emblem rather than anything to do with the bird itself. The name has stuck through nine decades, surviving even 1943, when a wartime shortage of players forced a one-season merger with the Pittsburgh Steelers under the makeshift banner "Steagles."
Three NFL Championships arrived early, in 1948, 1949 and 1960, before the long wait that followed. The Eagles picked up six NFC Championships in all, spread from 1960 to 2022, but it took until 2017 for a Super Bowl to reach Philadelphia, and Jalen Hurts brought a second in Super Bowl LIX. Jeffrey Lurie has owned the club since 1994, long enough to see both titles.
The rivalry with the Dallas Cowboys still defines the NFC East for supporters here, sharpened by the 1989 "Bounty Bowl" and by a physical style that has rarely cooled off since. Chuck Bednarik and Reggie White are the names Philadelphia reaches for when the conversation turns to what the franchise has produced at its best, while Jason Kelce's years at centre gave the current era its anchor.
Lincoln Financial Field holds 67,594 for a game day.
