The franchise had reached Brooklyn in 1930, when local businessmen Bill Dwyer and Jack Depler bought the Dayton Triangles outright and moved them east, calling the new team the Brooklyn Dodgers after the baseball club whose home they now shared. That name lasted until 1944, when the football side became the Tigers, playing in burnt orange, black and white rather than the Dodgers' old colours. The change came too late to alter the team's fortunes: the Tigers finished that lone season 0–10, the only year the name existed at all.

Ace Parker had worn the Brooklyn jersey through the Dodgers years, an NFL Most Valuable Player in 1940. The league itself cancelled what remained of the original franchise that year.
