Feldkirch Women

In the 2009/10 season BW Feldkirch reached the third round of the EHF Women's Challenge Cup — before the Dutch side Bizztravel Dalfsen ended it. It stands as the furthest a Feldkirch women's team has gone in Europe.

Founded in 1946, the club took its blue-and-white colours straight from its name, and while the men's section went on to collect national and European titles, the women's team has never lifted an Austrian championship or cup. Promotion to the WHA Meisterliga came in 2005, and third place in 2009 and 2010 remains the high point in the league table.

What the club is known for locally is scale rather than silverware: it is reckoned the largest volunteer-run handball club in Austria, and that base has fed a youth academy that has sent players such as Lara Hanslik and Marina Jakob into Austria's national youth teams.

Matches are played in front of a few hundred people at the Reichenfeldhalle. That fixture is against SSV Dornbirn Schoren, a meeting known in Vorarlberg as the Ländle-Derby.
