Fighting Camels

Buies Creek had a football team once before, fielded by Buies Creek Academy and then Campbell Junior College, and that first attempt lasted until 1950 before the school let it go. Campbell University did not bring it back for more than half a century, reviving varsity football only in 2008 and opening the new era on 30 August that year against Birmingham Southern, in the Pioneer Football League, a non-scholarship tier of Division I football.

The Fighting Camels have since moved conferences twice, leaving the Big South for the Coastal Athletic Association in 2023, and they play in front of 6,200 seats at Barker–Lane Stadium in black and orange. Davidson has been the fixture on the rivalry side of the schedule.

Mike Minter, a former NFL linebacker, took the program through a decade of that rebuild, coaching from 2013 to 2023. What came out of those years reached the league he once played in: Julian Hill became the first Campbell player to hold a spot on an NFL roster, first with the Miami Dolphins and then with the New England Patriots, while Brevin Allen got there first in terms of actually taking the field, appearing for the Los Angeles Chargers in 2023.

For all of that, the Camels have yet to bring home a conference title in their current form.
